   COMMUNITY CONNECTIONS

On Saturday, October 18th, many GWA-AAUW members rallied alongside their community at Whittier City Hall as part of the nationwide No Kings Day of action.  For AAUW members, this was a powerful nonpartisan demonstration defending education, economic opportunity, and civil rights. We protested rollbacks to Title IX protections, expansions of voucher programs, campus censorship, and bans on DEI initiatives that threaten to limit access and opportunity for students.

Did you know the City of Whittier has a large and active arts community whose efforts are visible throughout the city year-round?  In 1987, the City of Whittier authorized the formation of the Cultural Arts Commission as the official agency for the encouragement and development of the arts in the community and schools.  Check out their website:  https://www.whittierprcs.org/about-us/cultural-arts

On Saturday, November 8, 2025 from 9AM to 12 PM, The City of Whittier Cultural Arts Commission will sponsor a very popular yearly event, Chalktastic! Families and individuals of all ages are invited to transform a 4’×4′ square into a colorful chalk masterpiece on the sidewalks of Whittier City Hall, 13230 E. Penn Street.   Registration is free and includes a chalk kit and kneeling pad — prizes will be awarded by age group and for People’s Choice.  Enjoy live demos, games, food vendors, and a lively community atmosphere
